Profile - Aurelia in Focus

Meet the voiceย

Aurelia Zorya Kovalenko is the light at the heart of NOTH โ€” The Light Bearer, and the voice known as The Glass Songbird. Hers is a voice of hope, humanity and quiet strength: luminous without being weightless, delicate without ever being fragile.

Her music lives where intimacy meets scale โ€” piano-led confession opening into strings, atmosphere and cinematic space. There is emotional clarity in everything she sings, but she never needs to force it. Aurelia does not overpower a song; she illuminates it.

There is something elemental about her world: light passing through clouds, wind moving across water, warmth returning after darkness and the stillness that arrives when everything unnecessary falls away. Her songs hold grief and beauty in the same hand. They do not deny what has been lost; they ask what can still be carried forward.

The name Glass Songbird captures the contradiction at the centre of her artistry. Her voice can sound transparent and breakable, yet it carries extraordinary resilience. Glass may fracture, but it can also catch light, reflect it and send it somewhere new. Aureliaโ€™s vulnerability is never presented as weakness. It is the place from which her strength becomes visible.

As The Light Bearer, she does not represent perfection or endless optimism. Her hope has been tested. It is a conscious choice made with full knowledge of darkness. Her music is about connection, compassion, displacement, memory and the small human gestures that remind us why tenderness still matters.

Between Ukraine and Liverpool

Aurelia was born in Ukraine and raised in Liverpool. She grew up between two languages, two landscapes and two different understandings of home.

Ukraine lives in her through family memory, inherited songs, food, language and an instinctive connection to land. Liverpool gave her a second vocabulary: water, weather, wit, music and the ability to find warmth without sentimentality. Ukrainian was the language of childhood and family; English became the language through which she discovered her public voice.

She now lives near the Mersey, drawn to the river because it holds movement and permanence at once. Water carries distance, but it also connects. For Aurelia, the Mersey is not a replacement for the place she came from. It is the landscape in which both parts of her life have learned to exist together.

She does not describe herself as divided between two homes. She sees herself as enlarged by both.

Her Musical World

Aureliaโ€™s sound brings together cinematic pop, atmospheric folk, contemporary classical music and orchestral singer-songwriter traditions. At its centre is her luminous lyric soprano, surrounded by piano, strings, restrained percussion and arrangements that leave enough room for silence to have meaning.

The piano is often where her songs begin. A few unresolved chords, a melodic fragment or a repeated figure may sit with her for days before words arrive. She is interested in what happens just before a voice breaks, just after a room falls quiet and in the emotional tension between holding on and letting go.

Her British influences include London Grammar, whose spaciousness and emotional restraint strongly resonate with her; Kate Bush, for her imaginative freedom; Florence Welch, for her elemental scale; Elizabeth Fraser, for the way a voice can become atmosphere; and Birdy, for the intimacy of piano-led storytelling.

Her Ukrainian influences reach across contemporary and traditional music. She admires Jamala for the power of cultural memory carried through the voice, ONUKA for bringing ancestral sound into a modern electronic world, Khrystyna Soloviy for lyrical folk sensitivity and DakhaBrakha for their fearless reimagining of Ukrainian vocal tradition. The suspended beauty and spaciousness of composer Valentyn Sylvestrov also speak deeply to her own understanding of silence, memory and light.

These influences are not costumes that she puts on. They are languages she has absorbed: British art-pop restraint beside Ukrainian melody, ritual, land and remembrance.

Her defining solo world began with GLASS, a body of work built around transparency, fracture and the strength required to remain open. Beyond it, projects including ะŸะ†ะ” ะžะ”ะะ˜ะœ ะะ•ะ‘ะžะœ (Under the Same Sky) and ะกะ’ะ†ะขะ›ะž ะœะ†ะ– ะะะœะ˜ (Light Between Us) allow her Ukrainian voice to stand fully in the foreground.

Her collaborations, including Light Through Timber / Glass Songbird with NORTHBOUND, reveal another side of her gift: the ability to enter someone elseโ€™s musical landscape without losing her own light.

GLASS โ€” Album ยท 2026

Released before PROTOCOL, Aureliaโ€™s defining solo debut is built around transparency, fracture and the strength required to remain open. PROTOCOL โ€” Collaborative Album ยท 2026

Aurelia is one of the four principal voices of PROTOCOL alongside Elara, Lyra and Nova. Her solo lead songs on the album are Closed Circuit, Firewall and Override, placing her luminosity and emotional restraint within PROTOCOLโ€™s darker landscape of control, resistance and human agency.

The PROTOCOL single This Way features Aurelia with Lyra, bringing two of the projectโ€™s distinct voices together in a shared performance.

Light Through Timber / Glass Songbird โ€” with NORTHBOUND ยท 2026

This two-part duet collaboration brings NORTHBOUNDโ€™s organic warmth and storytelling together with Aureliaโ€™s luminous voice. Each artist enters the otherโ€™s landscape without surrendering their own identity: timber meeting glass, earth meeting light.
