Profile- NORTHBOUND In Focus
NORTHBOUND
The Storytellers
The Alt-Folk Heart of NOTH
NORTHBOUND are The Storytellers—the alt-folk heart of NOTH, shaped by open roads, weathered landscapes and the quiet pull of home.
Their music blends organic folk instrumentation with a modern, cinematic edge, built around storytelling that feels intimate, restless and lived-in. There is warmth in their sound, but never polish for its own sake. NORTHBOUND songs carry dust, distance and memory—the sense that every journey leaves something behind.
With their debut album, Wildfire Psalms, NORTHBOUND established a world of raw acoustic textures, emotional restraint and widescreen atmosphere. These are songs that feel equally at home beside a fire, on an empty road or beneath a changing sky.
A Band Built on Shared History
NORTHBOUND did not have to manufacture their chemistry. It existed before the band did.
Fraser and Ewan are brothers. Jamie is Fraser’s cousin and closest friend, while Ross and Finlay are Jamie’s younger brothers—and identical twins. Two Reid brothers and three Kerr brothers, connected through family, friendship and years of understanding one another without always needing to speak.
Fraser and Jamie, both 41, form the mature centre of the band. They carry the longest shared history and understand instinctively when a song needs to be pushed and when it should be left alone. Ewan, 38, brings warmth and stability between the two family lines, while 33-year-old twins Ross and Finlay introduce a younger, more restless energy.
They do not always approach music—or life—in the same way. That difference is part of NORTHBOUND’s strength.
Musical Inspiration
NORTHBOUND’s musical inspiration begins with Scottish folk tradition—not as something preserved behind glass, but as something still capable of travelling.
Narrative ballads, laments, communal voices and the physical movement of fiddle and mandolin sit at the foundation of their sound. Around that foundation are the intimacy of modern indie folk, the grit of roots music, the emotional release of alternative rock and the slow-building scale of cinematic and atmospheric post-rock.
Their influences can be heard in the contrast between closeness and distance: a lone acoustic guitar beside a voice, followed by drums, electric guitar and layered harmonies opening the song into something vast.
They are influenced as much by place as by music—the rhythm of tyres on a long road, rain against glass, the sudden silence after an argument, the sound of people singing together and the particular feeling of seeing familiar land after being away from it.
NORTHBOUND do not recreate the past. They carry its emotional truth into the present.
Fraser Reid
Lead Vocals · Acoustic Guitar · Principal Storyteller
Age: 41
Fraser is the emotional centre of NORTHBOUND.
His voice carries the weight of the band’s stories: distance, memory, grief, endurance and the complicated meaning of home. He does not sing as though he is performing a feeling. He sounds as though he has already lived through it and is only now finding the words.
His acoustic guitar provides the first structure around which many NORTHBOUND songs are built. Fraser is drawn to narrative folk writing, restrained singer-songwriters and melodies that leave enough space for silence to become part of the song.
Quietly authoritative rather than commanding, Fraser is the person the others instinctively look towards when a decision has to be made. He listens before speaking and rarely wastes words. He carries responsibility naturally, although he does not always admit how heavily he feels it.
There is also a dry, understated humour beneath his seriousness—most visible around Jamie, who has known him long enough to recognise it before anyone else does.
His outlook on life: Fraser believes that leaving teaches you what truly belongs to you. Home is not always somewhere you can return to; sometimes it is what you learn to carry.
Ewan Reid
Bass · Backing Vocals
Age: 38
Ewan is NORTHBOUND’s foundation.
His bass playing is warm, melodic and deliberately understated. He gives the songs weight without crowding them, creating the steady ground beneath Fraser’s acoustic guitar, Jamie’s folk instrumentation and the wider movement of Ross and Finlay.
His backing vocals bring another kind of warmth. Where Fraser’s voice often carries weather and experience, Ewan’s harmonies introduce reassurance—the sense that however solitary the story may feel, somebody else is still walking beside it.
Recognisable by his copper curls, Ewan is the most naturally approachable member of the band. He notices shifts in mood quickly and often becomes the quiet mediator when stronger personalities pull in different directions.
He is thoughtful without being solemn, dependable without becoming predictable, and possesses the kind of humour that arrives quietly and catches everyone off guard.
Musically, Ewan is drawn to the warmth of classic roots recordings, expressive bass playing, close vocal harmony and songs whose emotional force comes from simplicity rather than volume.
His outlook on life: Ewan believes a meaningful life is built through small, faithful acts—showing up, remembering, listening and staying when it would be easier to leave.
Jamie Kerr
Fiddle · Mandolin · Backing Vocals
Age: 41
Jamie gives NORTHBOUND their strongest connection to folk tradition.
His fiddle can sound weathered and mournful or suddenly alive with movement. His mandolin brings urgency, texture and light, allowing the music to travel without losing its roots. Through him, the landscape does not merely surround NORTHBOUND—it enters the sound.
The eldest Kerr brother, Jamie is also Fraser’s cousin and closest friend. Their friendship forms the hinge between the Reid and Kerr sides of the band. They share an instinctive musical understanding, although their personalities are different.
Where Fraser tends to hold things inward, Jamie is more likely to say what needs saying. He is practical, plain-spoken and difficult to unsettle. He brings perspective when the others become too close to a song and is often the person who reminds them that emotional honesty does not require unnecessary complication.
Jamie draws inspiration from Scottish fiddle traditions, old ballads, communal music-making and the way a melody can carry history without requiring an explanation. He respects tradition deeply, but he has no interest in imitating it without adding something lived and personal.
His outlook on life: Jamie believes inheritance only remains alive when it is used. You honour where you came from by carrying it forward—not by refusing to let it change.
